Today is the deadline for submitting comments on the Draft Environmental Impact Assessment (IEA) for the proposed gas-fired power station next to Saldanha Steel.
They say ignorance is no excuse, but how must the man on the street make educated and calculated decisions about the pros and cons of a project of such enormous impact if the website is not available and/or accessible to many and if they are not properly informed?
What will the cumulative and combined impact be of a power station next to a steel manufacturing plant – and most importantly – is the Saldanha Bay Municipality equipped to monitor, police and enforce all the crucial legal and environmental rules and regulations continuously if the red dust issue at Saldanha could not even be resolved yet?
