Little time left for public comment on proposed phosphate mine at Vredenburg

Here is the letter of Notification from the DMT group regarding the proposed phosphate mine on the farm Yzervarkensrug 127 near Vredenburg/Saldanha and how/where residents and roleplayers can participate.

RE: APPLICATION FOR A PROSPECTING RIGHT AND APPLICATION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL
AUTHORIZATION
Notice is hereby given in terms of Section 16 of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development
Act, 2002 (ACT 28 of 2002) (MPRDA) and Regulations published in Government Notice R. 982 of
04 December 2014, under sections 24(5), and 44, of the National Environmental Management Act,
1998 (Act No.107 of 1998), that Adelaide Ruiters Mining and Exploration Pty Ltd (A.R.M.E.) has
applied for a Prospecting Right with the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR). A.R.M.E. has
applied to conduct prospecting activities to ascertain the economic viability of phosphate ore and
limestone deposits on Portion 2 of the farm Yzervarkensrug 127, located 4.5 km south of
Vredenburg and 6.5 km North of Saldanha Bay, in the Western Cape Province.
In order to obtain environmental authorisation from the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR), a
Basic Assessment (BA) process needs to be followed. As part of the process, and in terms of
Section 24 (4) and Regulation 41 (b) of the NEMA Regulations, A.R.M.E. is required to consult with
and notify in writing any affected party of the proposed development and the application, and to
submit results of such consultation to the DMR.
In light of the above, DMT-Kai Batla (Pty) Ltd (DMT-KB) has been appointed by A.R.M.E as the
independent environmental consultants, to undertake the Public Participation Process for the Basic
Assessment. DMT-KB wishes to extend an invitation to you to engage with us should you have any
comments or concerns about the proposed project.
The Draft BAR & Environmental Management Plan (EMP) will be available for public review and
comment for a period of 30 days (15 August- 15 September 2016). To access these reports, please
