At the last management meeting the question was raised as to the status of the roadworks in Langebaan. Some of our members complained that the roadworks were impeding their business activities.
We raised the question with the municipality and received this response from the Saldanha Bay Municipality Engineers, who responded as follows:
“Our response to your enquiry written on the messages below is as follows:
- Contractually, the construction will be completed by end of February 2017.
- We anticipate that improved accessibility and traffic flow on Oostewal street be provided to road users by December 2016.
- During the initial stages of the current active contract of Ostwald Road the contractor was behind schedule for about 6 weeks.
- In our recent site meeting it was confirmed that the contractor has managed to catch up with two weeks on his approved base programme.
- That means now are 4 weeks behind on their construction programme.
- Further discussions in the meeting confirmed that in overall by end February 2017 next year the works will be on programme.
- The delays were caused by various factors but mainly identification and location of existing services delayed the works.
- The above delay occurred because our municipal as-built drawings did not contained or shown all the existing services laying underneath the old Ostwald Road in Langebaan.
- Now in that situation you can imagine the contractor has to be cautious and take time and do some confirmation or measures of what is underneath before doing any digging or excavations for laying the pipes.
- I hope the above draw a picture that lead to the delay and also confirms that by end of construction the situation will be rectified onsite.
