BIRD’S EYE VIEW OF ACTIVITIES AT ELANDSFONTEIN MINE

Work at the notorious Elandsfontein phosphate mine seems to be continuing as usual despite an urgent pending Supreme Court case brought by the West Coast Environmental Protection Association to stop the mining company EEM from continuing without the essential licences and permits.

While a date for the Supreme Court case could not yet been set due to “unnecessary?” delays by the state attorney’s office regarding essential paperwork (at an additional cost of R600 per hour!) the West Coast Environmental Protection Association – WCEPA reacted as follows to the aerial photos of the Elandsfontein mine published by WeskusonTheline yesterday:

Dear Friends, this entire structure is illegal. There are no licenses in place which have been approved. There is no permit which says that they could remove the Fynbos, no permit in place which allows them to build dams, or fill it with water. No license in place to emit, this mine is so dodgy it does not even want to admit that the water flows into the Langebaan Lagoon, look how close it is to the Lagoon! Please stand in solidarity with us, the only way forward is to stop this by a court, the case is under way and it shows clear noncompliance with the law on every step. The fees for the case is R600 000. This is very important if we do not stop it now, we will have to live with the consequences for generations to come. The window of opportunity is fast closing.
