STATE OF THE BAY . . . TEENAGER WHO REQUIRES STRICT DISCIPLINE AND TLC

The State of the Bay is like a teenager with growing pains . . . not too shabby, a few danger areas that need urgent attention, improvement in certain areas, decline in others, but overall LOTS of potential PROVIDED that strict monitoring and compliance enforcement strategies are applied and maintained during the adolescent stage of the IDP! 😉

More than 100 people attended the Open Day of the Saldanha Bay Water Quality Forum Trust at the Langebaan Country Estate to listen to various experts’ input regarding all the past and planned projects, future developments and the current State Of The Bay. Trust Chairman Christo van Wyk said he is happy that the scientific reports of the various experts suggested that the potential dangers posed by the IDZ developments are less than they feared.

Dr Barry Clark, director at Anchor Environmental Consultants, said in his Status Of The Bay report he finds the potential impact of the huge industrial and marine-culture developments quite “scary”. The positive part is that, for the first time in his 10-12 year involvement with the Trust, both National and Provincial departments and authorities have joined forces to help.

“I have witnessed the gradual erosion of the Bay over the past 12 years due to population and industrial growth. Where National and Provincial help is especially needed, is with compliance enforcement to ensure that industries comply with permit conditions, rules and regulations,” he said.
