These are maybe not the most aesthetically pretty photos, but definitely the BEST PICS of the YEAR for Langebaners and West Coast peeps who had to drive all the way to the Saldanha Weigh bridge in order to get to Langebaan while the R27-entrance to the town was closed during the lengthy road construction works.
This 24 km detour became a very costly and frustrating exercise – especially for school bus drivers/kids and people who had to drive to Hopefield/Yzerfontein or Cape Town on a daily basis.
The road from the Engen One Stop garage on the R27 to Langebaan was finally opened for traffic this afternoon. GROUP FIVE project manager Willem Heymans took the photos on request for Weskusontheline the moment the road was officially opened.
Langebaan’s controversial new Oostewal Road was also completed last week – just in time for the holiday makers – and ending the first phase of a comprehensive road construction project that will commence early in the new year.
However, Langebaan’s pretty new road with its separate lanes, fancy median and traffic circles, came at a high cost . . . and the battle is far from over yet. (Read underneath)
But the good news is that both new roads were completed before the festive days and that no blood was shed in the heated process!
LANGEBAAN : THE END OF THE ROAD (WORKS) IS NIGH . . . NO MORE DETOURS!
Weskusontheline’s FB announcement and the photos taken on request by Group Five manager Willem Heymans caused quite a stir and grateful motorists immediately and spontaneously expressed their joy and relief on various social media platforms this afternoon:
YAY – Group Five is busy opening the road from the R27 entrance as we speak . . . NO MORE detours! Tonight will finally mark the end of a traumatic chapter in a long road saga . . .
